Hong Kong Sports Betting Issues

In 2002, the government of Hong Kong granted monopoly status for horse racing and football betting to the Hong Kong Jockey Club in an effort to curb cross-border gambling.  In other words, in Hong Kong, by law, the HKJC with its Happy Valley and Sha Tin racetracks, six off-track betting shops and the HKJC website are the only places Hong Kong residents may use to bet on horses or football.

Although they have a monopoly, the HKJC offers their customer-base a poor overall betting experience compared with most international sportsbooks that operate legally in other jurisdictions.  The HKJC for example does not offer betting on cricket, rugby, tennis, golf or any American sports.  For the football matches they do cover, their odds are not always competitive.  A quick comparison of the available odds for football at free market sites proves this to be true.  Lastly, the HKJC does not offer mobile betting.  Most free market online sportsbooks have developed mobile-optimised sites so betting on-the-move is quick and easy.  The HKJC site is cumbersome at best from a desktop environment, and is not designed for use from your mobile.

Unfortunately, most of the world’s best betting sites have shied away from accepting Hong Kong customers as a result of this 2002 legislation.  Make no mistake, if you are only interested in football and horses and want more than anything to bet legally, the HKJC is your best option. But for the best Hong Kong sports betting you’ll need to register with a betting site that is seen as illegal within Hong Kong (see below).  I’ve reviewed all the top sports betting sites and online racing books around the world for my various review sites and there have been some amazing innovations in betting.   There are four excellent companies that still accept Hong Kong registrants and three can even call themselves Hong Kong Dollar betting sites with interfaces that allow for betting in Chinese.

How to bank with a betting site from Hong Kong

Most sports betting sites focus on the average customer.  However, fortunately if you are interested in betting large sums of money, each of the sites listed have some of the highest betting limits available across all companies, not just Hong Kong-friendly sites

I review the limits at each of the betting sites that I list so you can bet as much as you would like to, on the sports that interest you the most.

Legality of Online Sports Betting in Hong Kong

Illegal gambling and football betting is still rife within Hong Kong itself.  This comes in the form of organized crime syndicates that look to accept wagers from people in exchange for physical betting tickets.  Police actively pursue both the illegal sportsbooks and the bettors although the punishments are vastly different.

For illegal bookmakers, maximum penalties could reach seven years in prison and up to $5 million HKD in fines.  For bettors, maximum penalties include up to nine months in prison and up to a $30,000 HKD fine.

Clearly the Hong Kong government takes illegal betting seriously as these are serious penalties.  This site does not advocate any Hong Kong resident betting illegally.  As mentioned, most reputable online sportsbooks will not accept registration from customers whose home addresses are in Hong Kong.  I know this well because I have reviewed the best sportsbooks for each market as addressed in my network of sites that you can see at the bottom of this site.

However, if you are a Hong Kong resident, and travel outside Hong Kong on a regular basis and are looking to place bets while you are away from home, the online sportsbooks that I list above will accept your registration and you will be able to bet LEGALLY when you are outside of Hong Kong, as the 2002 legislation only pertains to betting while in Hong Kong.

Remember, all sports betting sites will want to know your address, so even if you intend only to use the betting site outside of Hong Kong, they still must accept your registration, and only those listed above will allow this.

If you intend to register with these online sportsbooks, you should not use them while within Hong Kong.  If you do intend to use them in Hong Kong ensure to exercise care and discretion, especially in terms of how you intend to deposit and withdraw funds.  I discuss this issue more on my page about Hong Kong sports betting banking methods.

My Hong Kong Bookie Criteria

Most sports betting review sites are actually based on a relationship between the publisher and the betting site.  In other words, the online sportsbook gives a preferential deal to the publisher for a placement near the top of its list and a positive review.

I don’t operate like this, or have bogus ratings. I establish my own criteria based on the national market that I’m covering and then list the best services as I find them in alphabetical order, perhaps separated by important attributes.

In this case as the Hong Kong Dollar as an accepted currency is extremely important to Hong Kong bettors, I group HKD accepting sportsbooks at the top, and list the best of the next group below that do not offer the HKD.

All sportsbooks must accept Hong Kong-based bettors for registration.  They must have a great track record of fairness, security and a reputation for trustworthiness.  They need to cover sports in comprehensive fashion with competitive odds.  They must offer at least one free payout or withdrawal per month with Hong Kong-friendly banking methods.  They also must provide a quality mobile betting platform.

The best online sports betting sites for bettors living in Hong Kong

BetOnline has operated online since 1991 and is based outside of Asia from the Panama City, Panama.  BetOnline have shown to be unconcerned with betting regulations as they also accept bettors from the USA where online betting has been banned.  Read the BetOnline.ag Hong Kong Review.

Go! Go!

MarathonBet might be the best option for Hong Kong bettors.  MarathonBet is one of the few betting sites that offer HKD accounts and payment methods.  In addition, MarathonBet have made their name as the betting site to offer perhaps the highest available odds.  Read the MarathonBet Hong Kong review.

Key to your sportsbook experience is the manner in which you’ll be able to deposit and withdraw funds from your betting account via your chosen Hong Kong-friendly banking methods.

As no sportsbook in the world offers Hong Kong Dollar betting accounts, you will need to set your betting account to another currency.  In conjunction with this, you may also want a banking method that exists in the same currency to minimize currency exchange fees.  Each separate sportsbook review lists the accepted currencies for each site.
